CALLING ALL DOGS!

There is going to be a party...STANLEY'S PARTY!

Hi boys and girls. As you can see Miso is very busy writing out invitations to Stanley's Party. He has his tuxedo ready and Geisha has been trying on her party dress. I could hardly wait to start our dog unit and now May is here. This week, we are going to have a story about a naughty little pug named Pig who is always getting into mischief.  Let's read Pig the Tourist together and you can see all the naughty things Pig does while he is on vacation.

Pig the Tourist Video:

I am still missing all of you and hope we are back in the library soon getting books and listening to stories. In the meantime: KEEP CALM AND KEEP READING. Remember, READING MAKES YOU SMART.

Can you find the silly goose?

Mingsi was going for a walk and he met some new friends today. It reminded him of one of his favourite books, The Serious Goose. He wanted me to read it because the pictures are so funny. I hope you enjoy it as much as Mingsi!

Let's read the Serious Goose together, and after you have watched the video, if you'd like to print a Canada word search with the word goose in it, you can!

Our Favourite Toast Loving Pig is Back!

A Piglet Named Mercy by Kate DiCamillo
Miso: I love hot buttered toast.
Mingsi: Me too, but Geisha gobbled hers like a little piggy and ran away.
Miso: Speaking of pigs, I'm glad Mercy Watson isn't here or she would eat all the toast.

Hi boys and girls! Our favourite pig Mercy Watson is back and she loves toast. You might remember the first story about Mercy, when she wanted to drive Mr. Watson's pink convertible. Well, now there is a new picture book explaining how Mercy came to live with the Watsons. I wouldn't mind if Mercy came to live at my house.

Let's read A Piglet Named Mercy together, and then you can work on a special colour by number activity sheet after if you'd like :)

INTRODUCING THE WEASLEY TWINS

The Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen (Kingdergarten Read Aloud)
GEORGIE: Is that what I think it is?
PURRCY: It is! It's a fish!
GEORGIE: Let's eat it!
PURRCY: It's too small. Let's eat Miso instead!

Hi boys and girls. I would like to introduce you to Georgie and Purrcy. Do you remember those naughty cats of Aunt Sarah's in Lady and the Tramp? Well Georgie and Purrcy are just like them. In fact, their favourite movie is Lady and the Tramp.
That little fish reminded me of the Shimmer Fish in the book The Pout Pout Fish. I think that is a good book to begin our ocean stories. We'll be finishing our ocean unit with some pirate stories.

Let's read The Pout Pout Fish together, and then, if you'd like to print a picture of the Pout Pout Fish to colour at home, you can!

The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
Hello boys and girls from Peace Arch! Peter Rabbit is teaching Miso how to play Peek-a-boo.  Peter is very good at hiding. He likes to hide in Mr. McGregor's garden and eat yummy rabbit snacks. He always has to be ready to hide if Mr. McGregor is around. I hope you enjoy the story of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It was written by Beatrix Potter over 100 years ago. We have all of her books in our library and you can sign them out when we are back at school.

Let's read The Tale of Peter Rabbit together, and then I will add some activity pages you can work on at home if you like!

Baby Hummingbirds are Here!

Hi boys and girls. My friend who is an amazing photographer took this photo this week in White Rock. Soon there will be two baby hummingbirds flying around us. THE WORLD IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!

Did you know the hummingbird (often called hummers) is the smallest of birds and lays the smallest egg? They only live in the Western Hemisphere of the world, so that means they are in Canada where we live. They drink nectar from brightly coloured flowers. I am going to plant petunias in my garden for them. There is a legend that says if you are feeling sad and a hummingbird hovers near you, then you will feel happy again.

I thought you might like to listen to a funny story about a big bear and a little hummingbird called Hector and Hummingbird.  After you have listened to the story, check out the printable activity pages in case you feel like working on one at home!

I WOULD NEVER QUIT (Eating treats that is)

Hi Peace Arch boys and girls. I am thinking about you all every day and hope you are all well. Today we are going to talk about that funny author Drew Daywalt, who wrote the hilarious book The Day the Crayons Quit. I know that we have read the story together before, but I am going to include a link to a video of the story being read on YouTube so you can refresh your memories.

Video of The Day the Crayons Quit:

After you have have stopped giggling about about Peach Crayon (you know what I'm talking about) you might want to go to Drew Daywalt's official website, which I will also post a link to. His website is really neat, and my favourite part of it is the "Story Time with Drew Daywalt" section, where he  posts videos of himself reading some of his other funny books like Sleepy the Goodnight Bunny, and The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors. We have those books in our library at school so you might want to look for them when we get back so you can read them!

Hope you enjoy listening to all of these funny stories!

Wake Up, Henry Rooster ~ Margriet Ruurs (Grade 2/3 Read Aloud)

Would somebody please tell that rooster to be quiet so I can get some sleep?

Mingsi is very tired because he stayed up too late playing cards with Miso last night. He would not be very good at living on a farm because he does not like to get up early. Wake Up Henry Rooster is a story about a rooster named Henry who has the same problem as Mingsi. He likes to stay up too late having fun. I hope you have fun listening to this story and finding out how Henry solved his problem.

After you have watched the video of the story, there are some printable activity sheets for you to do at home!

Finklehopper Frog ~ Irene Livingston (Grade 1 Read Aloud)

IS IT HARD TO BE GREEN?

Hi boys and girls. I hope you are all doing OK today. As you can see, Miso is very interested in frogs. One day he was watching TV and heard Kermit say, "It's not easy being green," so ever since, he has been worried about frogs. Here is a video of Kermit singing It's Not Easy Being Green so you can see what Miso is talking about.

I'm going to read you a book today about a frog named Finklehopper Frog. He is not worried about being green, but he is a little bit worried about not being able to jog. But then a good friend tells him its OK to be different and do your own thing which makes him feel better. Miso can relate, because he spends most of the day doing his own thing too.

After you watch the video of Finklehopper Frog, you can click on the link for a printable version of a frog dot-to-dot sheet that you can work on and colour at home.

The Book That Makes Grownups Say Silly Things

Miso - I love books with pictures
Mingsi - I love books without pictures
Geisha - No you don't. You just want to read "The Book With No Pictures" so you can say BOO BOO BUTT

You might think a book with no pictures is boring, but this one is not! It is so funny you will want to read it over and over (like Mingsi makes me read it every night.) You will love listening to the author B.J. Novak reading his hilarious book. Then read it out loud to someone else and make them laugh too.   When school is open and you come back to the library we will read it out loud together!

Here is a video of B.J. Novak reading The Book With No Pictures (get ready to laugh out loud!)

Miso. Mingsi and Geisha are still laughing after reading that book for the hundredth time!

If you'd like to work on some activities from The Book With No Pictures you can click on the link below. Yes, you can make a Boo Boo Butt mask ;) (Activities from http://thebookwithnopictures.com/)

You could also try writing your own silly version of a book with no pictures - get a pencil and a piece of paper and use your imagination to come up with something to make people giggle!

Still missing you!

Welcome back to the Library Dog Blog. Today I am going to read you some Easter stories. Miso's favourite is Pete the Cat.  Miso has never been near a cat, but he really thinks he would like to. TRA-LA-LAAAA!

Hello everyone!

You might be wondering why Mingsi is wearing his underpants. It is because he was listening to a Captain Underpants story. He laughs whenever he hears the word underpants just like you do.

Dav Pilkey is an author who always makes us laugh - the Captain Underpants and Dog Man books are some of the most popular books in our library!

Mingsi and I thought you might like to work on some Captain Underpants and Dog Man activities while you are at home. I have attached two Captain Underpants colouring sheets that you could print and colour (if you have a printer at home),  a Captain Underpants crossword puzzle and two "How to Draw Captain Underpants and Dog Man" guides so you can try to draw your own characters at home!

1) Captain Underpants colouring sheet (from bestcoloringpagesforkids.com)
Click here for the link to download the colouring page: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m2Fs308A7wHbZKHHeplGjbhzj_QNpvKW/view?usp=sharing

2) Captain Underpants colouring sheet (from https://pilkey.com
Click here for printable version of this sheet: https://pilkey.com/fun-stuff

3) Captain Underpants Crossword (from scholastic.com)

4) How to draw Captain Underpants and Dog Man (Step-by-step instructions, from  https://pilkey.com

Click on this link for printable versions of these how-to-draw guides: https://pilkey.com/fun-stuff

And if all of that isn't enough, Dav Pilkey has started a new website called "Dav Pilkey at Home" where he is adding weekly videos and activities for kids to keep entertained at home!  Every Friday he adds a new video of himself showing how to draw one of his famous characters, or reading from one of his books, so make sure to check out the link and see what fun things he has available for you!

I also know that many of you have your own Dav Pilkey books at home, so pull them out and read one for at least 15 minutes today - because reading makes you smart!

WARNING! Wash your hands before reading this post...

Hello Peace Arch!

Today Miso and Mrs. Porter are going to remind you how to wash your hands:

1. Put soap on your hands
2. Sing alphabet song so you wash them long enough!

Here is a video Miso asked me to make to help you with your hand washing:

STAY HEALTHY!

All this talk about hand washing has me thinking about one of our favourite furry storybook characters who knows all about staying safe and germ-free in his tree, do you know who I'm thinking about?
Here's a hint - he's scared of green martians, germs, and killer bees...

it's our friend Scaredy Squirrel!

Click on the link below to see a very important video message from Scaredy Squirrel himself:
Mélanie Watt: Watt's REALLY IMPORTANT NOW!: A very important message from Scaredy Squirrel. #SafeHands

Now, if you're in the mood to read a Scaredy Squirrel story, visit library.sd36.bc.ca and follow the link below for instructions to try reading a Scaredy Squirrel story from our online catalogue on your personal device from home!

"I solemnly swear, that I am up to no good" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Hello Peace Arch students - I still miss all of you!

This is Geisha. She is a 5 year old rescue Japanese Chin. She loves to read Harry Potter. She is trying to transform Miso and Mingsi into toads so then she will be the boss of the house.

I know that many of you love Harry Potter just as much as I do - maybe even more! I wanted to share a few cool Harry Potter links with you to look at while you are at home. Geisha and I spent all morning getting sorted into our Hogwarts houses - can you guess which one she was sorted into?  That's right, she's a Gryffindor! She's hoping to meet Hermione in the library :)

There is a newly updated Harry Potter website that you might want to check out called "Harry Potter at Home" - it has lots of fun activities like word searches, quizzes, and a link to the free audiobook of the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Audible.

Here is the link to the Harry Potter at Home website: https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/harry-potter-at-home

and here is the link to the free audiobook version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Audible: stories.audible.com

If you have an account with Surrey Public Library, you can also download the eBook and audio versions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with no wait time!

Hope you are all keeping well and doing some reading!

Hello Peace Arch Students!
Welcome to Mrs. Porter's first ever blog post - it is going to be all about READING and BOOKS.

I miss seeing you in the library and hope you are all doing well. I am hoping to give you and your families links to websites and apps, so you can have fun reading. Keep checking back and I will give you ideas to share and enjoy books together.  If you would like to subscribe to the blog to receive email alerts to new posts, enter your email in the "Subscribe by Email" box near the top right of the page!

You can see the first post has a picture of Miso and Mingsi. They are 11 year old twin brothers and they love to listen to books. (Although they have been known to fall asleep when I read to them.)

All of my pets will be reading with us. Can you already tell what kind of books are our facts favourites?

Please don't worry about your reading records for "Reading Across Canada" - everyone that started one will get their prize.

There will be lots of prizes and treats when we are able to return to the library. For now, just do your best reading the books you have at home and online. Reading or listening to the same book over still improves your reading. Remember: READING MAKES YOU SMART!

Love, Mrs. Porter
