MISO CROSSES CANADA (With Holden and Sawyer)

Carson Crosses Canada by Linda Bailey

HOLDEN: Why are Miso and Sawyer sitting in the front seat?
MRS. PORTER: Miso is helping me drive. He knows all the provinces of Canada.

Hi Boys and Girls: Yes! Miso does know all the provinces of Canada. That is because we read this wonderful story a lot. It is probably my very favourite book - it is about an old lady and her dog going across our amazing country in her little car. I bet you can guess why I love it so much! It is a great story and teaches you something special about each province in Canada. I hope you enjoy this clever and funny book and like the surprising ending.

UP THE CREEK!

Up The Creek by Nicholas Oldland

MINGSI: Hurray! It's Canada Week. We're going to go across Canada.
GEISHA: Do we have to walk?
MISO: I am going to ride the moose.
NORMIE: I think we are up the creek!

Hi Boys and Girls: One of the really great things about Canada is all the amazing animals that live here. Today we are going to read a story about 3 Canadian animals - Moose, Beaver and Bear. They are best friends, but as you all know, even best friends sometimes disagree over things. They argued a bit too much and a bit too loud. In fact, they argued so much they ended "Up the Creek."

Listen to the story and find out how they rescued themselves.  After you have listened to the story, you can colour a cute Canadian animal colouring page!

Aren't Moose, Bear and Beaver silly? I love how they rescued themselves.

THERE WAS AN OLD LADY

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Moose by Chrissy Bozik

MISO: Well here we are - we are finally camping. I always wanted to try.
NORMIE: I didn't like the trip very much.
MINGSI: No kidding. Next time let's drive to the lake!

Hi Boys and Girls! Do you remember that silly old lady who swallows everything - like some snow, a frog, a shell, a bell, a book and more. Well in this story she swallows a MOOSE, and a lot of other yucky things. We chose this Old Lady Story because it is very Canadian and the ending is something we like to do in Canada. Well, most of us. Mrs. Porter and her dogs are not very good at putting up a tent.

Enjoy the story, and Happy Canada Week!

Help Me, Mr. Mutt!

Help Me, Mr. Mutt!: Expert Answers for Dogs With People Problems by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

MINGSI: How do you spell "Dear Mr. Mutt?"
MISO: What are you doing Mingsi?
MINGSI: I'm writing a letter to Mr. Mutt because our treats are too small!

Hi Boys and Girls: Mingsi has the right idea. Dogs write to Mr. Mutt to get help with their people problems, and Mr. Mutt answers their letters and gives them advice in the newspaper. This sounds great, but Mr. Mutt has a big problem of his own - a crabby cat called The Queen lives in his basement and she wants to be in charge.

After you have listened to the story, you can work on a cute cat and dog colouring sheet, or a cat and dog crossword puzzle - or you can work on both if you'd like!

Welcome to the SHAREMORE Hotel

There's a Dinosaur on the 13th Floor by Wade Bradford

MISO: Please tell me you guys don't snore.
DINOS: OH NO - We are very quiet sleepers.
MISO: I am looking for somewhere to sleep to get away from Geisha's snoring.

Hi Boys and Girls! Miso is dreaming if he thinks he will get some sleep at the SHAREMORE HOTEL.
Get it - SHARE - you have to share a room with somebody! This is also a "wildlife friendly" hotel so you can expect to share your room with some pretty interesting guests.  This hotel has something for everyboy - except poor Mr. Snore. He can't find a quiet room to get some sleep. Guess he should have been more specific when he made his reservations.

After you have listened to the story, you can work on a fun T-Rex pattern colouring sheet!

Dinosaur Colouring Sheet:

Do you think you'd want to stay in a hotel with a dinosaur? Sometimes I think I run my own dog hotel because I spend all day with Miso, Mingsi and Geisha serving them breakfast, lunch and dinner, cleaning up after them and making up their fluffy dog beds for bedtime!

Six Dinner Sid

Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore

Hi Boys and Girls: Here is another cousin of Mingsi and Norman. His name is Sid. The reason you have not seen him before is because, 1) He is too busy eating to be photographed and 2) Dogs are a little nervous to go near his food.

I hope you like the funny story of how Sid manages to get 6 dinners every day. He is a pretty smart cat! If you like Six Dinner Sid, you might want to see what he gets up to on his next adventure called Six Dinner Sid: A Highland Adventure, which I will also include a link to.  You won't believe what happens to Sid when all his owners go on holiday at the same time! After you have listened to the stories, you can work on a Cat Breed word search and learn the names of a bunch of different cat breeds, including a Highlander like in the Sid story!

PIGS!

Pigs by Robert Munsch

NORMAN: So this is what pigs look like. Mingsi told me that Geisha is a pig because she eats all of our treats.
MISO: I think pigs are really cute. I wish I was pink!

OINK! That is pig talk for "hello Boys and Girls." Did you know that pigs are very clean animals. They only roll in the mud because they want to keep cool. They don't have sweat glands. They are also really smart and can make very good pets. If you want to see a funny pet pig, click on the link and watch Mercy Watson. I think she is my favourite pig!

After you have listened to the pig stories, you can work on a pig colour-by-number sheet. For this colour by number sheet, you will need to do some addition to figure out which number corresponds with which colour!

Duck on a Bike

Duck on a Bike by David Shannon

NORMIE: I would really like a bigger bike!
GEISHA: I would really like a pink bike!
MINGSI: I would really like a scooter! (With a motor hee hee)
MISO: I would really like to sit in the basket with a blankie.

Hi Boys and Girls: Here is a book written AND illustrated by David Shannon. Remember him from the pirate books? In this story, duck gets a great idea. Find out what the other animals all think of the idea. I think they are a little jealous, but they all find ways to go for a ride.

After you have listened to this very funny story, you can work on a colouring sheet of two very famous ducks riding a bike - Daisy and Donald Duck!

FELIPE AND CLAUDETTE

Felipe and Claudette by Mark Teague

NORMAN: Miso? Mingsi? Geisha? Where is everybody? I thought we had a photo shoot for the library blog this morning.  Looks like my cousins Miso, Mingsi and Geisha are all sleeping in and forgot to come to our photo shoot. Do you think that means I can eat all of their treats??

Hi boys and girls! Today Miso, Mingsi and Geisha's cousin Norman has chosen a story for us to read about a cat named Felipe, and a dog named Claudette, who live at an animal shelter. Felipe and Claudette are waiting patiently for people to adopt them and take them home to become their pets. Claudette is a very silly and happy dog, and Felipe is a bit of a snobby cat, but they end up becoming the best of friends. Sometimes shelter animals have to wait for the exact right person to come along and adopt them - and when that happens, the people and the animals live happily ever after!

After you have listened to the story, you can work on a cat and dog word search if you'd like ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

MR. PUSSKINS

Mr. Pusskins by Sam Lloyd

MINGSI: BLAH BLAH BLAH
MISO: Pay closer attention Mingsi. You are lucky to be listening to stories - you could end up like Mr. Pusskins.

Hi Boys and Girls. That's right, Mr. Pusskins did not know how good he had it. His owner Emily was so kind to him, but he thought he needed a more adventurous life. Well, he learned a lesson and luckily Emily came to his rescue.

After you have listened to the story of "Mr. Pusskins" you might want to listen to the sequel, called "Mr. Pusskins and Little Whiskers" which I will include a link to as well. After you have read the stories, you can colour a fluffy cat colouring sheet ๐Ÿˆ

PIRATE GIRLS RULE!

Pirate Girl by Cornelia Funke

GEISHA: Avast Mateys. Haha. My brothers and cousins think they are such great pirates - but look who got the treasure!! ME!!

Hi Boys and Girl: Geisha is pretty happy to get that treasure. She is always asking me to borrow my jewellery.  Did you know that some of the wildest pirates in history were lady pirates? Captain Firebeard and his mean crew of pirates find that out when they kidnap a little girl named Molly, then meet her mother, Barbarous Bertha.

I am including two different pirate sheets for you to work on today. One is a colouring sheet and the other is word search!

DOGS AND FOALS

Horseplay! by Karma Wilson

NORMIE: Wasn't it fun playing with these baby horses?
MINGSI: I'm sorry I thought YOU were a horse Normie
NORMIE: Let's go have a nap. On our fluffy, comfortable doggie beds.

Hi Boys and Girls. We're back on the farm today. Mingsi is a little happier because these horses are so little and CUTE! Their names are Baby Ben and Baby Jerry and they LOVE to play. Then they get tired and need to nap. The horses in our story today also like to play. The trouble is, they like to play all night - then they sleep all day! The farmer has to stay awake all night to make sure they sleep - can you figure out what happens the next day?  I don't really have to worry about Mingsi staying awake all night - he likes to sleep all night and all day!

How cute is this video of one of the foals learning how to run and play at the farm? Mingsi and I think he has some pretty neat dance moves!

After you have listened to the story Horseplay! you can work a fun maze and colouring page. You have to help the pony through the maze to get to his vegetable treats. After you have completed the maze, you can colour all of the pictures!

ARE YOU A HORSE?

Are You a Horse? by Andy Rash

MINGSI: Are you a horse?
NORMAN: Don't be such a silly goose Mingsi, I'm your cousin Normie. Oh and Mingsi, we're not at a farm, we're in a field of daisies.

Poor little Mingsi, he gets so mixed up. I hope he never does find a horse and try to ride it. I think he is so little that he is better staying on the ground or in his cozy little bed. And Norman is too handsome to do farm work. And he is always wearing his best outfits!

I hope you enjoy this story of a mixed-up cowboy looking for a horse to ride. I have also attached a cute colouring page of a mama horse and her foal on the farm for you to colour. Make sure to check back tomorrow, when Mingsi and Norman actually get to meet some real horses at the farm!

THE LIGHTHOUSE DOG

The Lighthouse Dog by Betty Waterton

MISO: Norman, are you sure you want to visit a lighthouse? They look kind of lonely.
NORMAN: I heard sometimes there is pizza.

Hi Boys and Girls: Today we are reading a story called The Lighthouse Dog. I love this story because it is funny, adventurous, and has a really cool dog in it called Molly (who looks like Norman.) The man who is the lighthouse keeper is "The Captain." The lighthouse in this story was built on a rock, like many lighthouses used to be. You had to row ashore in a small boat like the Captain's wife did when she went to town to get a dog.

This story takes place in Canada on the Atlantic Ocean where there used to be many lighthouses. Lighthouse keepers devoted their lives to protecting ships and saving lives.  I hope you enjoy this story and find the lighthouses interesting like Miso, Norman and I do.

I have also included a nice colouring sheet of a lighthouse scene if you would like to work on it as well.

THE GOOD EGG

The Good Egg by Jory John

MISO: WOW - living in a carton with 11 roommates would be very hard. Especially when they are all naughty!
MINGSI: I think being the good egg would be boring. I would like to be the naughty egg HAHAHA.

Hi Boys and Girls. Find out what it is like living with 11 naughty eggs in this EGGCELLENT book called THE GOOD EGG.

I am also attaching a Good Egg activity sheet where you can create yourself as an egg!

OLD MACDONALD HAD A BOAT

Old MacDonald Had a Boat by Steve Goetz

NORMAN: Isn't this fun Geisha? I love boating.
GEISHA: It would be a lot more fun if I could wear the Captain's hat.

We are going to read another Old Mac book today. I think it is very cool that Old Mac and Mrs. Mac like to soup up trucks and boats. Who would have guessed there is so much going on on their farm. They are using a lot of really noisy tools in this story, so get ready to sing along. Maybe you can make up your own Old Mac lyrics and your own story.

After you have listened and sung along with the story, you can do a fun colour-by-number boat sheet. It will look so beautiful when you have it all done!
